In the Story[]
The Adaptoid was once Dr. Arnim Zola, a brilliant Swiss scientist who worked with Red Skull to mastermind Hydra's efforts in the second World War. At some point, he came into conflict with Captain America, resulting in him losing his body and being forced to use machines as vessels.
Eventually, Zola would make his way to the Contest, joining forces with Red Skull and the Cabal. They recovered the Cosmic Cube from Asgard, which Red Skull used to power an Adaptoid-creating machine. Now with Adaptoids as his vessels, Zola confronted the Avengers as they began to uncover the Cabal's scheme, but the Adaptoid was promptly defeated and scrapped.[2]
Zola then managed to reverse-engineer the Elders' ISO-Spell, which he used on Night Thrasher and Darkhawk to hinder their efforts in uncovering the Cabal's plans, however this attempt was ultimately unsuccessful resulting in Thrasher summoning the Silver Surfer.[3]
While under Black Widow (Claire Voyant)'s control, Diablo briefly transmuted himself into a Hydra Adaptoid to fight the Summoner.[4]
Zola would then ally himself with the Grandmaster, providing him with an ISO-Overcharged Adaptoid model which he would eagerly test against Carina Tivan's group.[5]
Inexplicably, Zola's consciousness became trapped inside his Adaptoid vessel. Allying himself with the Maestro, he devised a scheme to put the Avengers under his mind control, and manipulated Patriot and Falcon into destroying the Adaptoid, freeing his consciousness to be transferred to Avengers Tower (and eventually a new body).[6]
