A Gate is an area in a Quest that can only be passed if you have a certain Champion on your team. Gates may be specific towards one Champion, or may force you to include a Champion of a specific Class.
Gates were especially notorious on the final Quest in the first Story Event Ultron's Assault, ULT-3-3 Avengers Assemble, as you needed every member of the Avengers, some of which (including Vision (Age of Ultron) and Black Widow) many players didn't have.
