King Groot (Deathless) is a Cosmic Champion. Being a Cosmic Champion, he has a Class Bonus against Tech Champions, but is weak to Mystic Champions.
King Groot is available exclusively as a Trophy Champion, and can only be obtained through collecting all 5 of his pieces and trading them in the store.
Bio[]
In years past, Champions from the Death Realm staged an assault on the Battlerealm. Empowered by the Death Stone, Thanos created nameless, empty versions of the heroes of the Battlerealm. Of these nameless Champions, a select few were granted malicious will and elevated to become the Deathless, to lead his armies and sow chaos and destruction. King Groot was the second Deathless he created. Rising from the undergrowth of a barren alien forest, the Deathless master of ash conquers all!
Mechanics[]
King Groot (Deathless) takes the methodology set forward with Guillotine (Deathless) and applies it to King Groot’s kit. Since King Groot’s update was a significant improvement over his launch kit we have decided to keep that as the base and build on top of it from there. With the Deathless version we have opted for an Incinerate-themed make-over in light of his new look. To accomplish this, we have sacrificed some of the potency in the Regeneration Buff gained with his Signature Ability to add in a loop where you can build a resource and cash it out to enhance the potency of the Incinerate Debuff he inflicts on his Special Attack 2. This Incinerate replaces the Poison from the old kit and comes with some spicy new VFX work.

Abilities[]
Always Active
- Unique physiology grants Immunity to Bleed, Power Drain and Power Burn effects.
Dev Notes: Tech Champions will find their Power-reducing abilities severely limited.
Personal Fury Buffs
- Unless otherwise stated, personal Fury Buffs each provide +X Attack Rating and last 14 seconds.
| Tier | Attack Rating |
|---|---|
| 854.7 | |
| 2170.5 |
- When inflicted with a Debuff, spend 1 personal Fury Buff to remove the effect after 0.5 seconds.
- When a personal Fury Buff is spent, gain an indefinite Ignition Buff. Max stacks: 3.
Dev Notes: The ability to remove incoming Debuffs at the cost of a Fury Buff is an important piece of utility. Note that this is no longer a “Purify” and will not interact with Purify punishing mechanics. This means he is limited to only removing 1 Debuff for each Fury Buff he has active at any given time.
Malice - Passive
- Start the fight with a Malice Passive, which grants 3 Fury Buffs each time it activates. Malice lasts as long as at least 1 personal Fury Buff is active.
- While Malice is active: Gain up to +100% Fury Buff Potency based on how long the fight has gone on. Max Bonus after 100 seconds.
- When Malice ends, it goes on cooldown for 12 seconds.
Dev Notes: A small change from the original King Groot’s kit that is worth drawing attention to is that Malice lasts 14 seconds instead of 13 seconds allowing him to be a little more aggressive for a little longer.
While Malice is on Cooldown
- Any attack that makes contact from either Champion has a 30% chance to grant 1 Fury Charge. When cooldown ends, gain 1 Fury Buff for each Charge and re-enter Malice.
- When the Opponent Evades, Auto-Blocks, or causes an attack to Miss, gain 2 Fury Charges. Cooldown: 2 seconds.
Dev Notes: Similar to above, the cooldown timer here is slightly shorter than the one found on the original King Groot’s kit, down to 12 seconds from 13 seconds. This is to keep the full 26-second rotation consistent between both kits despite this small shift. The chance to gain Fury Charges is also increased to 30% from 20% to mimic some of the effects the original King Groot gains from synergies and relics.
Heavy Attacks
- Deal a burst of X Energy Damage, this damage is doubled while the Opponent is Incinerated.
| Tier | Energy Damage |
|---|---|
| 284.9 | |
| 723.5 |
- Pause all Incinerate and Armor Break Debuffs on the Opponent for 3 seconds.
- Malice: Spend 1 Fury Buff to instead Pause for 6 seconds.
Dev Notes: King Groot (Deathless)’s fiery new visage has inspired some tweaks to his kit. This burst of Energy Damage is a nice treat, but you still want to keep your Armor Breaks and Incinerates up as long as possible. Spending Furies to pause these Debuffs is a nice way to build up Ignition Buffs by pausing them, and they can still be paused if the Debuffs themselves are already indefinite.
Signature Ability[]
Unyielding Might - Always Active
- Gain up to +41 - 101.04% Incinerate duration based on how long the fight has gone on. Max bonus after 100 seconds.
- When Malice enters cooldown, gain a Regeneration Buff recovering X Health over 12 seconds.
| Tier | Health |
|---|---|
| 2766.48 - 6831.89 | |
| 7026.85 - 17352.94 |
Dev Notes: This Signature Ability allows you to significantly extend the duration of the very painful Incinerate from Special Attack 2, but the real showstopper is the Regeneration effect. This Regeneration Buff creates a great sense of ebb and flow in King Groot (Deathless)’s kit.
Special Attacks[]
Special 1 - Incendiary Intensity
Smash the opponent into the unforgiving soil with devastating slams.
- Each hit inflicts a X Armor Break Debuff for 15 seconds. These Armor Breaks also reduce Energy Resistance by 8%. Max stacks: 10.
| Tier | Armor Rating |
|---|---|
| 306.82 | |
| 375 |
- Malice: Spend 1 Fury Buff to make the Armor Break indefinite.
Dev Notes: Feeding into his fiery nature, these Armor Breaks reduce the Opponent’s Energy Resistance instead of their future Armor Up potency. This attack will be the number one way to build Ignition Buffs that will be spent with your Special Attack 2 later.
Special 2 - Infernal Bombardment
Pour forth an intense wave of devastating flames.
- Each Infernal Breath hit deals a burst of X Energy Damage. This damage is doubled against #Hero Champions of the Tech Class.
| Tier | Energy Damage |
|---|---|
| 2849 | |
| 7235 |
- The final hit inflicts an Incinerate Debuff dealing X Energy Damage over 10 seconds. Max stacks: 2.
| Tier | Energy Damage |
|---|---|
| 5698 | |
| 14470 |
- When this Incinerate triggers, consume all Ignition Buffs to increase its potency by +30% for each Buff consumed.
- Malice: Spend 1 Fury Buff to double the Incinerate’s duration.
Dev Notes: This is your cashout moment. If you have built up your three Ignition Buffs, then this attack will hit like a truck.
Special 3 - Savagery Unleashed
Send out ashen vines to envelope the opponent and crush them.
- Gain a Regeneration Buff, recovering X Health over 3 seconds. This Regeneration Buff is paused while Heal Blocked.
| Tier | Health |
|---|---|
| 6814 | |
| 17307.5 |
- Malice: Spend 1 Fury Buff to increase the Regeneration Buff’s duration by 50%.
Synergy Bonuses[]
Strengths and Weaknesses[]
Strengths[]
- Long Fights
- Long battles allow King Groot to build up as many Fury Buffs as possible when his next Malice cycle begins. The Deathless version can gain even more Buffs with his heightened Ability Accuracy, and end fights faster by juicing up the potency of his Incinerate Debuff from Special Attack 2.
- Armored Opponents
- Like the original King Groot, the Deathless version can quickly tear through a Tech or otherwise Armored Opponent’s defenses with the Armor Breaks from his Special Attack 1.
- Tankiness
- King Groot is synonymous with Tanky Gameplay in the Contest, while still being an Attacker first and foremost. While the Deathless version may have sacrificed some of the potency of his Regeneration abilities, he keeps the increased base Health stats of his predecessor.
Weaknesses[]
- Nullify
- King Groot’s gameplay is heavily oriented around Fury and Regeneration Buffs, Buffs that are easily wiped away by the Nullify effects of various Mystic Champions.
- Time-Oriented
- Malice triggers on and off at fixed durations, so it can be tricky to play into King Groot’s intended loops and cash out before your window of opportunity suddenly shuts.
- Immunities
- A lot of King Groot (Deathless)’s damage is locked behind his Armor Break and Incinerate Debuffs. If your Opponent can negate these effects, he will struggle to reach his full potential.
Recommended Masteries[]
- Extended Fury / Enhanced Fury
- The increased potency and duration for Fury Buffs from these Masteries help maximize King Groot (Deathless)’s potential.
- Double Edge
- King Groot (Deathless)’s Immunity to Bleed allows him to benefit from this Mastery without suffering the damage from the Bleed Debuff it inflicts.
- Recoil
- Easy access to a potent Regeneration effect allows King Groot (Deathless) to largely ignore the self-inflicted damage from this Mastery.
Recommended Relics[]
- Gamora
- King Groot (Deathless) does not gain the effects in this Relic that activate when you are playing the original King Groot. However, it still benefits greatly from the effects that all Cosmic Champions get. The extra Ability Accuracy, potency, and duration this grants his Fury Buffs is very helpful.
- Thor
- While King Groot (Deathless)’s Fury Buffs are not indefinite, he does benefit from the Vigor Passive and the Aptitude Buff from the Striker.
